They rarely fail due to write amounts, they fail because substandard design/engineering, and because they are not refreshed. Yea flash drives do fail but not as often as you would expect the technology has matured. It still has competitive data density compared to its cost, however, its ease of use is relegating it to exactly your question, backups. ![]() And IMO optical media is not on the way out. ![]() Many discs, music, data, DVD, blue ray, have a shelf life for how long the actual storage material of the disk remains viable. There composition can differ and some are better for long term storage, as in decades even in less than optimal storage conditions. Almost any grade burner can be used on any disk with the same effect, but not all disks are created equal.
